"CyberKnife is a stereotactic radiation therapy system which uses a compact linear accelerator mounted on a robotic arm, coupled with a digital x-ray image guidance system. The guidance system employs two orthogonal x-ray sources and detectors that capture real-time images of the patient throughout treatment, allowing continual alignment correction rather than relying on a single setup verification 3. There is also a respiratory synchronisation system that tracks chest movement throughout the treatment 4. The robotic arm allows movement with many degrees of freedom compared to typical linear accelerators which only rotate around the central axis. CyberKnife is used for intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery as well as stereotactic body radiation therapy (unlike the Gamma Knife system which is solely used for intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery)."
