"Passy Muir speaking valve is a common type of one-way speaking valve, allowing patients to speak post-tracheostomy tube placement. They are used in both adults and children ¹. With the valve in situ, the patient is able to inhale air normally into the lungs but on exhalation, the valve closes and air can flow over the vocal folds permitting speech to occur."
