"Typically shows a distended colon filled with faeces and associated mural thickening. Other findings include fat stranding, mucosal sloughing, mesenteric hyperaemia and extraluminal gas (if complicated by stercoral perforation). Distention of the rectal diameter beyond 60–65 mm is generally considered abnormal, but this should be compared with that of the proximal portions of the colon 7."
