"Patients complain of sudden onset of pain in a single digit. Within a few minutes, the finger becomes visibly discoloured, typically on the palmar surface, consistent with bruising, and then becomes swollen and pale 1. This is accompanied by sensory changes including numbness, pain, itching and tingling 1,2. Events occur sporadically, either spontaneously or after minor trauma, reported in 30% of cases 1,3. The index and middle fingers are most commonly affected, typically over the middle and proximal phalanges 1. The fingertips are typically spared 2."
