"Bone marrow signal of the clivus changes predictably with age. The only reason the clivus receives undue attention is that its bone marrow is well assessed with midline sagittal non-contrast T1-weighted MRI images of the brain, obtained in the majority of studies. As is seen in the rest of the body, the proportion of yellow (fatty) marrow increases with age. Being able to distinguish normal change from pathological change is helpful and may point towards prior radiotherapy (e.g. for nasopharyngeal carcinoma 4), local disease (e.g. metastatic disease) or systemic bone marrow involvement (e.g. leukaemia)."
