"António Egas Moniz read about the works from the French physicians, namely Jean-Athanase Sicard and Jacques Forestier, that pioneered the use of lipiodol in the imaging of spinal canal. In 1920s, Moniz started to search for a radio-opaque material suitable for the imaging of the brain vessels. Moniz later discovered that the 25% sodium iodide was a suitable solution. He successfully administered the solution by puncturing the internal carotid artery to image the anterior circulation of the brain. Building upon this work, he started to image the posterior circulation of the brain by cutting open the subclavian artery. The images obtained allowed him to describe in detail on how brain tumours and aneurysms are displacing vessels. Moniz named his procedure as "arterial encephalography".
